Metairie Missive

Welcome to Wednesday!  My prayer is that you have been finding your walk with Christ to be both challenging (so that you grow in Christlikeness) and refreshing (so that you face each new opportunity with excitement at the thought of God working in and through you).  Remember Paul’s words from Phil 3 – “I press on”!  So I encourage you at this mid-week time to “press on!”

We had a great church council meeting on Sunday night.  In the following days, we will make some highlights from the council available so that all of you can be aware of decisions that have been made and ministry opportunities that have been planned.

A few reminders for this week:

*.  Tonight our schedule returns to normal!  We will enjoy the Fellowship Supper beginning at 5:00 p.m.  Children and youth activities will take place at 6:00 p.m.  Bible Study and Prayer Time for Adults will meet in the Sanctuary at 6:10 p.m.  We will continue our study as we “Encounter the New Testament” and look at 1 John tonight.  Only a few books remain to be examined but we have all the past information posted online for your review and encouragement as you study the Word.  Also, tonight choir practice will take place immediately following the Bible Study.

*.  This Saturday is a busy day at MBC!  Helping Hands will meet at 8:00 a.m.  in order to help those in our church family and in our community who have needs.  All are welcome – there will be a variety of activities in which you can participate as MBC reaches out to assist with yard and house tasks to help others.

*.  Also, this Saturday there will be a work day at the church for those not involved with Helping Hands.  The day will begin with an organizational meeting at 8:00 a.m.  Afterwards, groups will be sent to accomplish various tasks throughout the church.  The main focus of the morning will be the removal of carpet and tile that was damaged during Hurricane Isaac.  If you are able, the following items would be helpful for you to bring on Saturday:  a wheelbarrow, floor scrapers, and flat shovels.

*.  The Women’s Ministry and Missions group is busy.  All ladies are invited to:
1. The Ladies’ Bible Study on Monday night at Terry Dickson’s home beginning at 6:30 p.m.
2. The Ladies’ Bible Study on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. at the home of Carol Wilken.
3. The Ladies’ Tea which will be held on Sept. 22.  Tickets are available now and you can also check the bulletin board in the Orion Foyer for more information.  Janie Wise will be speaking at the tea.  She serves through the Louisiana Baptist Convention and has an incredible heart for God.  You will not want to miss this opportunity of encouragement and fellowship if you are a lady!  We are thankful for our ladies and for their hearts for missions, ministry, and encouragement!

*.  Don’t forget about the Fall Food Roundup for the Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home.  This annual food drive is the focus of our Gathering mission project for the month of September. You may contribute any commercially canned, dry goods, paper products, toiletry items, cleaning supplies and money. All monies given will be used to purchase milk, bread, eggs, meat, and fresh produce as needed. These donations provide for the home families for the entire year. No gallon size cans, please! There are copies of a “Needs List” in the foyer and a designated area to place your offerings. Donations can be brought throughout the month – a designated place has been arranged in the Orion Foyer.

*.  VIPS is back!  Next Sunday at 4:30 p.m. before the Gathering, we are encouraging every member of MBC to attend.  VIPS is our opportunity to reach out to those who have visited and to encourage members in our church.  A variety of opportunities will be provided so that each person can find a way to participate in outreach.  Some will be Visiting our visitors and our homebound members.  Others will be encouraged to Intercede on behalf of those who have needs in our church.  Members will be encouraged to Phone others for encouragement.  Finally, we would like to have some who will serve as Scribes and write notes of encouragement.  Names and contacts will be provided for each of the groups above.  VIPS – Visiting, Interceding, Phoning, Scribing!  Everyone can find a way to participate in this important aspect of our church ministry.  Make plans to attend and at least give it a try.

*.  Just a reminder – the Gathering will be next Sunday night, Sept. 23, at 6:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall.

I look forward to seeing you tonight and Sunday.  God has given me many opportunities to experience great joy in my life.  Being your pastor is definitely one of those opportunities.  Let’s keep “pressing on!”

On the journey,
Thomas
